Adventure in Sri Lanka

In terms of adventure, visitors will be spoilt for choice with the variety of options available in Sri Lanka. There are endless thrills awaiting all - adrenaline pumping water sports, camping and trekking expeditions and ocean related adventure activities. Tourists are bound to have the time of their lives in Sri Lanka with all that is in store for them.

There are numerous kayaking and canoeing opportunities throughout the island, particularly along the rivers and waterfalls in the gorgeous settings of the hill country. For white water rafting, the Kelani River in Kithulgala is most popular - here novice and expert rafters alike can experience awesome rapids amidst serene tropical views.

Camping and trekking expeditions are a must for nature lovers in Sri Lanka. The Central Highlands, consisting of the Knuckles Range, Horton Plains and the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary are perfectly fitted with an abundance of natural beauty with gorgeous mountains, waterfalls, forests, and a host of endemic flora and fauna species. The Sinharaja Forest Reserve is another treasure trove to be explored - visitors will be able to trek through the forest via prescribed footpaths and enjoy an amazing array of birds and animals.

Sri Lanka offers endless thrills in terms of ocean related adventure activities ranging from whale watching to surfing the waves. There are two ideal locations for whale watching - Dondra Point which is accessible from Galle, Hikkaduwa and Mirissa towards the south of the island and Trincomalee on the east coast. The sea off Kalpitya has an abundance of dolphins that can be sighted from November to March. If you are a fan of deep-sea fishing, there are many hospitable local fishermen who will be willing to take you on daily or nightly excursions. Diving is another activity that is quite popular in Sri Lanka. The crystal clear waters have great visibility and there are several ship wrecks, deep reefs and reef walls that provide ideal conditions for scuba divers. Snorkelling opportunities are abundant as well here - Hikkaduwa in the southern coast has an amazing array of species of fish and gorgeous coral reefs to explore. Last but not least, Sri Lanka is a surfer's haven. Top surfing spots include Arugam Bay on the east coast and Hikkaduwa, Wewala and Narigama along the southern coast.
