Leisure activities in Sri Lanka

If you are looking for a relaxing break, then Sri Lanka has much to offer - the blissful beaches and breathtaking mountains provide a perfect backdrop for relaxation and rejuvenation. Popular leisure activities here include Ayurveda treatments and golfing in picturesque surroundings.

Ayurveda, one of the world's most ancient forms of healing originated in India over 3000 years ago, and quickly spread to Sri Lanka. Kings established treatment centres in the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa back in the day, setting the trend for this popular healing practice in the island. The basic principle of Ayurveda is simple - it is the use of natural products and techniques such as herbs, diet, massage, hydrotherapy and oil treatment to treat various forms of discomfort and ailments. The holistic approach of Ayurveda to treat the body, mind and soul makes it a popular choice for many. There are thousands of registered Ayurveda practitioners in Sri Lanka, many of which are set up in resorts located along beaches that cater almost exclusively to tourists. Visitors here will be able to stay for the weekend or even up to two weeks or more if desired.

Another leisure activity that is popular with tourists is golfing, with three of the finest 18 hole courses in Asia available here. The main courses in Sri Lanka include The Royal Colombo Golf Club, Victoria Golf Club and Nuwara Eliya Golf Club. The course at Royal Colombo is aptly situated in the capital Colombo and is 5770m long (par 71). With a relatively flat course dotted with water hazards and bunkers, this provides a great challenge for golfing enthusiasts. The Victoria Club, located in Digana close to the hills of Kandy, is a championship golf course that is 6190m long (par 73) that is characterised by narrow fairways, stately trees and natural outcrops of rocks. The finest golf course is in Nuwara Eliya which is 5520m long (par 71) and boasts magnificent views. The hilly terrain on the course demands skilful play and is a must visit destination for true golf fans.
