Unawatuna

Unawatuna is a lovely tiny beach located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, next to Galle and approximately 130 km south of Colombo. With the opening of the Southern Express highway, the journey time has been dramatically shortened; visitors can now reach here in 1.5 hours. Unawatuna was named the best beach in the world in 2004 by the Discovery Channel - today it is undoubtedly Sri Lanka's most magnificent beach. With an unbelievable combination of golden sand, excellent sea activities and gorgeous sunsets, this destination has all the elements required for a perfect beach holiday.

Unawatuna includes a gorgeous semi circular bay with a stunning pristine beach, enclosed on both sides with headlands. This sheltered cove is protected by a coral reef which provides a 2 km by 1.6 km area which has a maximum depth of only 6 m. Thus it is an excellent destination for year round swimming with gentle waves, giving the feeling of being in a wave pool. Unawatuna is also one of the best scuba diving and snorkelling locations in Sri Lanka, with a coral reef that shelters more species of fish than the Great Barrier Reef! There are several interesting wreck dives too about 20-30 mins away from the beach from boat, adding to the thrill of diving. A remarkable spectacle is a massive pure white Buddha stupa perched on top of a hill on one headland – this provides a wonderful view whilst one is swimming, surfing or lazing about on the beach.
